Personal Details: Barney was the son of William Read McVeagh and May Helen McVeagh of Cambridge. He was the brother of fellow Cambridge airman John McVeagh

Barney was educated at St Peter's Convent School in Cambridge, then Cambridge Primary School. His secondary education was done at the Marist Brothers School.

Prior to joining the RNZAF he was working with the New Zealand Government's engineering department at Freeman's Bay, Auckland, specialising in repairing diesel engines
